Question 3-What have you learned from your audience feedback?

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

For our audience feedback, we posted the complete video to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. We asked friends and family to comment on the video with what they like and what ways the video could be improved, weather it be adding little bits of detail or removing clips/scenes from the video. Many of the viewers were within out target audience, which benefited us massively as we were able to edit the video to suit the target audience by listening to their feedback on the video.

However, we weren't able to get a wider audience feedback as these social media sites require an account to use, thus we lost some of the audience feedback we could have got. Instead we used YouTube (as this was the site which many of our friends and family didn't have an account on) to get feedback from people we didn't know so that we could get a wider audience feedback. This also gave us most of our negative feedback, although most of the feedback we received was positive. These are some examples we received back from strangers on YouTube about our video, the majority of the feedback received is positive.

We received lots of positive comments on our video from YouTube comments, we have also received constructive criticism, about one particular scene.

We have taken into account all that has been said from these comments and have made slight adjustments to the video. Although, we haven’t changed the band and crew cartoon scene. As we set the video out to not stick to convention of a music video within that genre. The effect in question is the cartoon effect, which we used to record the band and crew shot (as pictured above). We added this effect so that it breaks up the rest of the video and puts emphasis on the band and crew.

We have edited the video to attempt to fix the problem of the singer. We have made it so that the video is in time with the music. It now looks like the singer is singing the words on the song, when in fact he is mouthing them.

I also uploaded my ancillary tasks to Facebook and asked for feedback on them.
Asking for feedback on the quality of my work rather than asking for a rating has large advantages.

  • Qualitative data can provide detailed responses that are able to show exactly what audiences like and dislike about my work, and therefore what I can improve in my work.
  • it encourages people to expand on their answer (as shown) and this helps to bring up topics that we had not initially thought about. This helps because it gives us more feedback that we had originally thought of.

Different theories suggest different things about audiences and audience feedback e.g. The hypodermic needle, The "hypodermic needle theory" implies that mass media had a direct, immediate and powerful effects on its target audiences.

A focus on audience is important in media studies when producing a music video, digipack and tour/album poster. There are many different theories on how audiences respond to and interact with the media. This shows clearly the complexities of focusing on the audience and the ways in which audiences can be visualised.

Overall, I am pleased with the feedback received from the group of people within our target audience who we showed the video too, as the majority of the comments received were positive. The one negative comment made, we believe were due to things that we thought made the video unique. We discussed the idea of the cartoon and agreed that we should implement it, we knew it wouldn't be to the taste of some, but we wanted the video to stand out from others like that in the particular genre.

I feel that through the feedback received for the music video, I can make a video similar to this again but better. One of the main things that I have learned is that planning the video is vital. Since we planned the video, we had a good idea of what we wanted as a group to see the video come out like. We also had an idea of the different types of techniques we would use throughout the video. I don’t believe the video would have been anywhere near as good if it wasn't for planning it.

Question 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For this question, I have uploaded the file to slideshare as it allows me to use a variety of different media aswell as some forms of editing. The question can be found here: Question 1
