Question 3-What have you learned from your audience feedback?

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

For our audience feedback, we posted the complete video to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. We asked friends and family to comment on the video with what they like and what ways the video could be improved, weather it be adding little bits of detail or removing clips/scenes from the video. Many of the viewers were within out target audience, which benefited us massively as we were able to edit the video to suit the target audience by listening to their feedback on the video.

However, we weren't able to get a wider audience feedback as these social media sites require an account to use, thus we lost some of the audience feedback we could have got. Instead we used YouTube (as this was the site which many of our friends and family didn't have an account on) to get feedback from people we didn't know so that we could get a wider audience feedback. This also gave us most of our negative feedback, although most of the feedback we received was positive. These are some examples we received back from strangers on YouTube about our video, the majority of the feedback received is positive.

We received lots of positive comments on our video from YouTube comments, we have also received constructive criticism, about one particular scene.

We have taken into account all that has been said from these comments and have made slight adjustments to the video. Although, we haven’t changed the band and crew cartoon scene. As we set the video out to not stick to convention of a music video within that genre. The effect in question is the cartoon effect, which we used to record the band and crew shot (as pictured above). We added this effect so that it breaks up the rest of the video and puts emphasis on the band and crew.

We have edited the video to attempt to fix the problem of the singer. We have made it so that the video is in time with the music. It now looks like the singer is singing the words on the song, when in fact he is mouthing them.

I also uploaded my ancillary tasks to Facebook and asked for feedback on them.
Asking for feedback on the quality of my work rather than asking for a rating has large advantages.

  • Qualitative data can provide detailed responses that are able to show exactly what audiences like and dislike about my work, and therefore what I can improve in my work.
  • it encourages people to expand on their answer (as shown) and this helps to bring up topics that we had not initially thought about. This helps because it gives us more feedback that we had originally thought of.

Different theories suggest different things about audiences and audience feedback e.g. The hypodermic needle, The "hypodermic needle theory" implies that mass media had a direct, immediate and powerful effects on its target audiences.

A focus on audience is important in media studies when producing a music video, digipack and tour/album poster. There are many different theories on how audiences respond to and interact with the media. This shows clearly the complexities of focusing on the audience and the ways in which audiences can be visualised.

Overall, I am pleased with the feedback received from the group of people within our target audience who we showed the video too, as the majority of the comments received were positive. The one negative comment made, we believe were due to things that we thought made the video unique. We discussed the idea of the cartoon and agreed that we should implement it, we knew it wouldn't be to the taste of some, but we wanted the video to stand out from others like that in the particular genre.

I feel that through the feedback received for the music video, I can make a video similar to this again but better. One of the main things that I have learned is that planning the video is vital. Since we planned the video, we had a good idea of what we wanted as a group to see the video come out like. We also had an idea of the different types of techniques we would use throughout the video. I don’t believe the video would have been anywhere near as good if it wasn't for planning it.

Poster basic

This is what my poster looks like so far. I will the conventions to it, such as, tour dates and the headlining band name

This is the original image which I had and edited to create my digipack. I used a combination of this and Stendeck-Sonnambula to create my digipack. I always liked the idea of including nature into my work somewhere along the line. So I decided to implement this into my digipack.  Forest Stock 045 by Malleni-Stock

My inspiration for my digipack

For my digipack, I used these images to get an idea and replicate them as I like the design of the panels

Poster Examples

For my poster, I have taken ideas from band tour posters.

One convention which shows up on many band posters, is that there is an image of the band above the tour dates and supporting bands.

This is a convention which I haven't used when adding the final bits to the poster. This is so that I can add more detail to the poster itself.

Although not present on my poster, the support bands are both in a different font compared to the headline band as well as the size. This shows which band are headlining the show and which most people attending are interested in seeing.

Magazine research

My A2 media studies coursework required me and my group to make a music video with our ancillary talk of making a digipack for the band, along with a poster advertising the album. As a group we decided that the genre for our song is pop rock, through our genre decision we looked at other videos within this genre and took ideas from them and implemented them into our music video.  I did this, so that our video can branch out to a wider audience, as well as keeping the focus audience interested in the song and video.

For one of the Ancillary tasks, I need to create a magazine advertisement for the Band's new poster.

Before I created my poster advertisement, I researched into suitable magazines for the advert to be displayed in.

I first need to understand my target audience in order to effectively appeal to them with the advert and its placement.
My target audience are:
·                Males and females aged 16-21
·                Interested in Pop rock music
·                Interested in Music Magazines
·                Living in the United Kingdom

NME Magazine features many Rock and Pop bands, and would be an excellent fit for my advertisement. The demographic of NME's target audience is between 17-30. NME is a unisex magazine but it is male dominated, with 73% of readers being male. 80% of readers feel that music plays a big part in their lives. This would mean the reader's would be inclined to buy a digipack that they have seen advertised if it looks interesting.

Kerrang! is also a male dominated male dominated magazine, with 68.3% of their readers being male. Kerrang! readers are approximately 70% ABC1, meaning they have a high disposable income. Kerrang's most prominent age rage is 15-24.  This ties in to my target audience, and is one of the main factors for choosing to display my advertisement in their magazine.

Kerrang! also has an extremely high brand influence score - 73%
this means that adverts in Kerrang! will reach and influence a large amount of people.
Due to the demographics of these two magazines being quite wealthy with a large disposable income, I will be creating my poster to suite them. The poster should not look out of place in a glossy magazine.

Recording update and new ideas

We have decided to re-record some of the scenes for the music video.
We have also decided to add in a form of lip syncing to our video, we will get actors to sync with the song. This allows us to use other types of editing and make the video longer.

Monday Meeting / Recording Update

During our time in Greece, we recorded some more clips for our music video as well as getting still images which we could use for our music video.

In our Monday meeting we will decide on what images/ video clips we will add into our video. We will keep most of the scenes the same as before.

Final decision digipacks

I have chosen these as examples of digipacks. Since they have a basic design with a main image in the middle of the cover an the title of the band above it, the pack can be replicated using photoshop.

Monday meeting 26/01/2015

For our Monday meeting we have decided to try and complete the following tasks:

  • Book a practice room, so that we can get close up of the base guitar and drum kit
  • Record the close up of the cards (which goes with the chorus)

Thursday, 22 January 2015

Draft close up

These are some photos which we took today while recording our clips for our close up of the drums. There are a variety of angles on it so that we can see what is the best for the video recording itself at a later date.

Recording Update

We weren't able to record the close ups yesterday due to the actor not showing up. However we were able to record part of the drum close up today although our actor wasn't wearing the same clothes as he was in the original shoot.

Monday meeting update

In my Monday meeting post we discussed more recording ideas with the close ups of the instruments.
We have been able to book a practice room, in which we will record one set of close ups for our instruments.

Monday, 19 January 2015

Example close ups

These are some examples of close ups which we have to record this week except for the rest of the instruments used. We also hope to get more clear and closer images of the instruments.

Monday Meeting 19/01/2015

For our Monday meeting we have decided to try and complete the following tasks:

More Editing 2

Over the nest few weeks we will be re-recording scenes such as the close ups on the postcards and adding in close ups of the instruments used during the video. We will decide where they will go in the video once we have recorded it.

More Editing

Kyle has been working on the editing for the music video. So far he has edited around 2 minutes of footage. However we will be adding more to it over the next few weeks when we add/change more scenes which we will be recording.

Other ideas for digipack cover

This is another example of a digipack style which I was thinking about using. Although there isn't as much detail as the other digipack examples

Digipack cover ideas

For my digipack example, I have decided to go for these examples. This is because it has the artist title and the name of the song which we are recording a video for.
